Can You Get an X-Ray at Urgent Care Without an Appointment?

You rolled your ankle or fell on your wrist and you want to know if something's broken — without a referral, a scheduled radiology appointment, or an ER wait. Here's how walk-in X-ray works.

You landed wrong on your ankle, fell on an outstretched hand, or took a hit to a finger — and now you want to know if it's broken. The good news: you don't need a referral, a scheduled radiology appointment, or an ER visit to get an X-ray. At urgent care, it's a walk-in.

Yes — you can walk in for an X-ray

Urgent care clinics with on-site imaging, including Sage Urgent Care, take X-rays as part of a same-day visit. No appointment, no referral from another doctor, and no separate trip to a radiology center. You walk in, a provider examines the injury, and if an X-ray is warranted it's taken and read during your visit.

What urgent care X-ray is good for

If an X-ray shows a fracture, urgent care can splint it, manage your pain, and refer you to an orthopedist for follow-up — often the same care an ER would provide for a simple break, without the ER wait or bill.

What it's not for

X-ray is excellent for bone, but some problems need imaging urgent care doesn't provide:

Rule of thumb: if the injury is isolated to a limb and you can still move it — even if it hurts — urgent care X-ray is usually the right first stop. If there's major deformity, numbness, or it came from a serious accident, go to the ER.

How the visit works

  1. You walk in and check in — no appointment needed.
  2. A provider examines the injury and decides whether an X-ray will change your care.
  3. A registered radiology technologist takes the images on site.
  4. The provider reads the X-ray during your visit and explains what it shows.
  5. If there's a fracture, you leave with a splint, a plan, and an orthopedic referral if needed.

Most injury visits wrap up in well under an hour.

Do I need a referral or insurance?

No referral is needed — that's the point of walk-in care. Sage bills most major insurance, and self-pay patients get a clear price up front before any imaging, so you won't be surprised by the cost.

Got an injury? Come get it looked at.

If you're wondering whether something's broken, the safest and fastest answer is an exam and, if needed, an X-ray read the same visit. Sage Urgent Care is walk-in, 7 days a week, 8 AM to 8 PM, with on-site imaging.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an appointment for an X-ray at urgent care?

No. Sage takes X-rays as part of a walk-in visit — no appointment and no referral needed.

Do I need a doctor's referral for an X-ray?

No. A provider at the visit examines the injury and decides whether imaging is warranted, then orders it on the spot.

Can urgent care tell if a bone is broken?

Yes. The X-ray is read on site during your visit, so you'll know before you leave whether it's a fracture or a sprain.

How long does a walk-in X-ray take?

Usually well under an hour from check-in to results, depending on how busy the clinic is.

What if I need an MRI or CT scan?

Urgent care doesn't do MRI or CT. If your injury needs one — for the head, spine, or detailed soft tissue — we'll direct you to the right place, or to the ER for serious trauma.
