Most minor injuries don't need the ER. Sprains, suspected fractures, lacerations, minor burns, and sports injuries are exactly what walk-in urgent care is built for — same-day evaluation, on-site X-ray when needed, stitches when needed, and clear guidance on what comes next.

Sage Urgent Care is staffed by emergency-medicine-trained physicians who handle the full range of injury presentations every shift. Our on-site digital X-ray reads same visit, our suture kit is stocked for everything from small lacerations to larger wounds, and we follow standard occupational-medicine protocols for work injuries.

How injury evaluation works at Sage

Our injury evaluation process is built around getting you a clear picture — and a treatment plan — without unnecessary waiting or a separate X-ray appointment two days later.

Initial assessment: A nurse takes your vitals and records the mechanism of injury (how it happened, when, what makes it worse). For suspected fractures and sprains, we do a focused neurovascular assessment — checking circulation, sensation, and movement — before ordering imaging.

On-site digital X-ray: If the exam indicates imaging, X-rays are taken on our in-house digital unit and read by the treating provider the same visit. No referral to an outside radiology center. Most extremity X-rays take about 10 minutes to complete. Results before you leave.

Treatment before discharge: Lacerations are cleaned and closed in the same room — sutures, skin glue, or staples depending on wound characteristics. Suspected fractures are splinted (not cast, which requires follow-up swelling reduction). Sprains are braced. You leave with written wound care or splint instructions, a return-to-activity or return-to-work guideline, and a referral letter if orthopedic follow-up is warranted.

Workers' compensation: For workplace injuries, we complete OSHA First Report of Injury documentation and generate return-to-work notes with specific work restrictions. Our providers have signed MOUs with most major workers' comp carriers operating in Union, Morris, and Somerset Counties — billing goes directly to the carrier.

When to go to the ER instead: Severe deformity, open fractures, injuries with loss of sensation or movement below the injury, dislocations requiring sedation for reduction, chest or abdominal injuries, head trauma with loss of consciousness, or any injury where you feel unsafe — those go to the ER. We will tell you clearly if what you walked in with needs a higher level of care.

Why Sage for injury treatment care

On-site digital X-ray

No separate radiology appointment. Image during your visit, read by your provider during your visit, treatment plan before you leave.

Emergency-medicine trained

Both Sage providers trained in emergency medicine. Sprains, suspected fractures, and lacerations are core clinical territory for us.

Stitches and wound repair

Most lacerations can be cleaned, closed, and bandaged in 30 to 45 minutes. We use the right closure for each wound — sutures, skin glue, or staples.

Splints and bracing on site

For fractures and sprains, we splint or brace before you leave. Most patients walk in with an injury and leave with a treatment plan in hand.

Workers' comp documentation

For workplace injuries, we handle the paperwork — OSHA reports, return-to-work notes, follow-up coordination.

Lower cost than the ER

ER visits average $1,000 or more for minor injuries; urgent care visits run $150–$200 self-pay. For non-emergency injuries, urgent care is faster and cheaper.
