Get treated today, not next week

Influenza is one of the most common reasons people visit urgent care in winter. The hallmark — sudden fever, body aches, exhaustion, headache, cough — usually develops within hours rather than days, and many patients describe feeling fine in the morning and bedridden by evening. Early treatment matters because antiviral medications like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) work best when started within 48 hours of the first symptom.

At Sage Urgent Care we test for flu on-site with a rapid molecular swab, evaluate your symptoms, screen for complications like pneumonia or dehydration, and start treatment in the same visit. Most patients are in and out in under an hour.

When to come in for flu symptoms

Go to the ER, not urgent care, if you have trouble breathing, chest pain or pressure, severe dehydration, persistent vomiting, confusion, bluish lips or face, or a child who can't stay awake or is breathing very fast. These can be signs of serious flu complications.

What flu treatment looks like

What happens at your visit

  1. Quick intake. When did symptoms start? Are you in a high-risk group? Any chronic conditions?
  2. Provider evaluation. Vitals, lung exam, oxygen check, and assessment for complications.
  3. Rapid testing. A short nasal swab. Results in about 15 minutes — often before the exam is even finished.
  4. Treatment plan. If positive and within the antiviral window, you'll get a Tamiflu prescription sent to your pharmacy. We discuss isolation, hydration, and warning signs to watch for.
  5. Documentation. Work or school note provided on request.

Why Sage for flu treatment

Rapid same-visit testing

Results in 15 minutes for flu, COVID, and RSV — often from the same swab. No follow-up trip required.

Antivirals when they help

Our providers prescribe Tamiflu based on current clinical guidelines and your individual risk — not by default for everyone, but when it will actually reduce your symptoms.

Open 7 days, 8 AM to 8 PM

Flu doesn't time itself to office hours. Walk in any day, including weekends.

Faster and cheaper than the ER

For routine flu, an ER visit costs ten times more and takes three times longer. Urgent care is purpose-built for exactly this.

Flu Treatment FAQs

Without testing, it's almost impossible to tell — the symptoms overlap heavily. We offer a combined respiratory swab that tests for all three at once, so you get a clear answer in about 15 minutes.

It depends on when your symptoms started, your age, and whether you're in a high-risk group. Tamiflu is most effective within 48 hours of symptom onset. After that window, the benefit drops significantly. Our provider will recommend it if it's likely to help you, and explain why if it isn't.

Adults are typically contagious from the day before symptoms start until about 5–7 days after. Children and people with weak immune systems may shed virus longer. Stay home until you've been fever-free for 24 hours without medication.

A flu shot is given before you're exposed to help prevent infection. Flu treatment is what you need when you already have symptoms. We offer both — the shot in the fall before flu season ramps up, and treatment year-round when patients come in sick.

Yes. Oseltamivir is approved for children 2 weeks and older and is available as a liquid suspension for those who can't swallow pills. Our pediatric-experienced providers will weigh whether it makes sense for your child based on age, symptom timing, and risk factors.

A negative flu test doesn't mean you're not sick — it could be COVID, RSV, another virus, or a bacterial infection. Our provider will examine you, consider your full picture, and recommend the right next step. We won't send you out the door without a plan.

Yes. Just let our staff know at check-in. We'll provide signed documentation with the days you should stay home.
